Rutgers Takes Third Place at George Washington Invitational

Senior tri-captain Kristen Marino (Hillsborough, NJ) saw one of Rutgers top finishes of the evening, placing second on the vault with a 9.675. Freshman Erin Lynch (Mullica Hill, NJ) tied for fourth, scoring a 9.625, while rookie Jamye Shelton (Griffin, GA) rounded out the top-10 finishes on vault, tying for seventh with a 9.600. UNC’s Mikel Hester won the event with a 9.725.
Junior Laura Iepson (Sweetwater, NJ) tied her career high on bars, scoring a 9.750 to tie for fourth place. Sophomore Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) tied for 13th, scoring a 9.600. Tiffany Jones of George Washington scored a 9.850 to take first in the event.
Sophomore Marinelle Antonio (Mt. Laurel, NJ) earned a share of the beam title, taking first place for the first time in her career, scoring a 9.700 in the event. Iepson tied for 13th on beam with a 9.550 while junior Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA), RU’s lone all-around competitor, finished in 15th with a score of 9.525.
On floor, sophomore Nicci Bradder (Dover, NH) led the Scarlet Knights with a 9.675, tied for 10th place. Sophomore Janice Blackistone (Kensington, MD), Lynch and Wight tied one another for 12th place, each scoring a 9.625. Rachel Mann of the host Colonials won the event with a score of 9.850.
Wight finished the evening with an all-around score of 36.725, finishing seventh in her first all-around outing. Courtney Bumpers of the University of North Carolina scored a 38.475 to win the all-around title, followed closely by GWU’s Mann with a 38.425 and Rhode Island’s Brooke Hamilton with a 38.025.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 22, when they head to Temple for a dual meet with the Owls, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. RU will open its home season on Saturday, Jan. 25, hosting James Madison, Ursinus and Towson at 1 p.m. in the Livingston Recreation Center.
