Rutgers Gymnastics Edged By Temple in Dual Meet

The scoring between the two schools was so close, the largest margin of victory for one event was 0.275, which is what the Scarlet Knights took the beam event by, scoring a 48.450-48.175. The Owls outscored the Scarlet Knights on vault (47.925-47.775) by 0.150, on bars (47.825-47.750) by 0.075 and on floor (48.025-47.900) by 0.125.
Leading the Scarlet Knights on vault was freshman standout Jamye Shelton (Griffin, GA) who placed second with a 9.675. Close behind was senior tri-captain Kristen Marino (Hillsborough, NJ) with a score of 9.600.
On bars, Marino took her first event title of the season with her first-place score of 9.725. Fellow senior tri-captain Kamla Modi (Bayside, NY) finished in a tie for third on the bars with a 9.650.
Junior Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) and her second-place score of 9.775 led Rutgers’ rotation on beam. Sophomore Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) and junior Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) tied for third place, scoring a 9.750 on beam.
On floor, Wight was the only Scarlet Knight to finish in the top three as she placed second with a 9.700.
This was the second-consecutive meet that Rutgers and Temple have squared off in. Thursday, Jan. 16, the two teams were a part of the seven-team George Washington Invitational, where Rutgers finished third, scoring a 189.100, while Temple finished sixth with a 185.675.
The Scarlet Knights will host their first meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. The quad meet, held in the Livingston Recreation Center, will feature James Madison, Ursinus and fellow East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL)-member Towson.
