DURHAM, NH - The Rutgers women’s gymnastics team had four of its members selected to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) all-event teams this evening at the pre-championship awards banquet. RU’s honorees were Kristen Marino (Hillsborough, NJ), Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ), Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) and Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA), all first-time award winners.
Marino, one of three senior captains this season, was named to the all-bars first team after becoming the only EAGL gymnast this season to win the league’s specialist of the week award twice. Also a leader off the mats, she was one of 11 RU gymnasts named to the EAGL All-Academic Squad this season. Ranked eighth in the Northeast region in the event, Marino has a regional qualifying score of 9.840. She is the second RU gymnast to receive first-team honors for the all-bars team, matching Dawn Campbell’s (1998-2001) award in 2000.
Abrams, a second-team selection, was named to the EAGL’s all-beam team. She has led the RU beam rotation to break the school’s record three times this season, and is tied for second on the all-time beam list after scoring a 9.850 against Bridgeport and Temple (Feb. 22).
Wight was selected to the all-floor second team. A standout on floor and beam, she is 18th in the region for floor (9.805 RQS) and 20th for beam (9.745 RQS). Wight helped the beam rotation break the RU team record three times this season and she was selected to the EAGL All-Academic Squad.
Shterenberg becomes only the third Rutgers all-arounder named to the all-EAGL all-around team, the first since former teammate Katie Russo (1999-2002) was honored in 2000. Shterenberg will compete as an all-arounder for the first time at EAGL’s after missing the championship in 2002 with injuries. Earlier this season, Shterenberg posted the second-highest all-around score in program history, scoring a 39.100 against Maryland.
The Scarlet Knights will compete in the EAGL Championships on Saturday, March 29, at 6 p.m.
