Four RU Gymnasts Qualify for NCAA Regionals
Mar 31 | Women's Gymnastics
Shterenberg, an All-EAGL All-Around second-team pick, will compete as one of five individual all-around qualifiers. With a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 38.335, Shterenberg will make her first regional appearance. She posted a 39.100 at Maryland, the second-highest all-around score in RU history.
Also making her first regional appearance will be Abrams, who was the individual event qualifier for beam. Abrams was named to the All-EAGL Beam second team and ranks 14th in the Northeast with a 9.800 RQS. She tied the second-best beam score in RU history with a 9.850 against Temple and Bridgeport and has led the Rutgers beam rotation to break the school record three times this season.
Marino will compete on vault and bars as the individual event qualifier in
both events. No stranger to the regional championship, Marino is the only active
member of the Scarlet Knight team to have competed with the team at the 2000
regional and, in 2002, she was selected as an alternate in both events. Marino,
a first-team selection to the
All-EAGL bars team, has been consistently one of the region's top competitors,
currently eighth in the Northeast for bars with a 9.840 RQS and 13th for vault
with a 9.805 RQS.
Wight will serve as an individual event alternate for both beam and floor. She has been RU's top performer on floor, helped the beam rotation to break the school record three times in 2003 and was named to the All-EAGL Floor second team. She is ranked 19th in the region for floor (9.810 RQS) and 22nd for beam (9.755 RQS).
The Northeast regional competition on Saturday, April 12, will be hosted by the University of Michigan. Six regional competitions consisting of six teams, five all-around competitors and one individual specialist per event are conducted to determine the 12 teams, 12 all-around competitors and event specialists to compete in the national championships. The top two teams and top two all-around competitors (who are not on the advancing team) will receive automatic berths. Event winners at the regional championship advance to the national championship (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
