RU Gymnasts Place Second in Final Home Meet

Senior Kristen Marino (Hillsborough, NJ) scored a 9.825 on vault to finish second overall in the event. Her score tied RU’s third all-time score she posted two weeks ago against Bridgeport and Temple (Feb. 22). Fellow senior Kamla Modi (Bayside, NY) also led the Knights, scoring a 9.725 to tie with teammate Jamye Shelton (Griffin, GA) for sixth place. Michigan State’s Lauren Simpson won the even with a 9.850.
On bars, the Scarlet Knights were again led by Marino and her score of a 9.800 to take third place. Sophomore Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) took fourth place on bars, posting a 9.775, while classmate Stephanie Zick (Pittsburgh, PA) scored a 9.675 to place 10th. Kathryn Fong of Yale won the bars title, scoring a 9.900.
The Scarlet Knight beam team broke the school’s record in the event, scoring a 49.000. It was the third time this season that the team has broken RU’s record, posting a 48.625 on Jan. 25, and then breaking it the second time with a 48.800 Feb. 22.
Junior Laura Iepson (Sweetwater, NJ) was RU’s top performer on beam, scoring a 9.825 to tie for fourth. The Scarlet Knights had a three-way tie for seventh place as Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ), Nicci Bradder (Dover, NH) and Shterenberg each scored 9.800’s in the event. Junior Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) was right behind the group in 10th with a 9.775. Brown’s Jayne Finst took the beam crown with a 9.875.
On floor, RU saw a pair of 9.850’s leading the way, as sophomore Jennifer
Miksan (Carol Stream, IL) and Wight tied for fourth place. Sophomore Janice
Blackistone (Kensington, MD) and freshman Erin Lynch (Mullica Hill, NJ) tied
with a 9.775 each in 10th place. MSU’s Sarah Alexander scored a 9.975
on floor to win the event.
RU was represented in the all-around competition by Shterenberg and her 38.300 for fifth place. Alexander placed first for the Spartans with a 39.425 composite score, followed by Brown’s Finst with a 39.175. MSU’s Simpson took third, collecting a 39.050, followed by Gina Verge of Brown and her score of 38.825.
The Scarlet Knights will complete the regular season with a pair of East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) meets, first heading to Maryland on March 15, followed by North Carolina on March 22.
