RU Gymnasts Drop Season Opener to New Hamsphire

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers gymnastics team (0-1) opened its 2004 season by falling to defending EAGL Champion New Hampshire (1-0) on Saturday, Jan. 10, by a final score of 194.250-193.350.
For the Scarlet Knights, junior Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) tied for first place on the uneven bars with a 9.875. Teammate Stephanie Zick (Pittsburgh, PA) finished in third place with a 9.825.
On the beam, Shterenberg and Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) finished in a tie for third place with scores of 8.000. Senior co-captain Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) placed sixth with a 9.750. Elizabeth Fittery (Denver, PA) and Lorena Johnson (Liburn, PA) made their respective collegiate debuts by finishing in a tie for seventh place (9.725). The beam rotation of Fittery, Johnson, Shterenberg, Wight, Abrams and Nicole Bradder (Dover, NH) nearly tied the school record with a 48.800 combined score. The current record in 48.900, set last year against Michigan State, Brown and Yale.
Wight tied for second place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.800. Zick was seventh with a 9.725.
In the all-around, Johnson scored a 38.625 to finish in third place, while Fittery placed fourth with a score of 38.500.
Rutgers returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Towson, MD, to face the Tigers in a 1:00 p.m. meet.
