Fittery, Bradder Guide Rutgers Gymnastics in Season Opener

DURHAM, NH – The Rutgers gymnastics team (0-1) dropped its 2005 season opener by a slim margin, falling to New Hampshire (1-0) 191.600 to 190.825 on Sunday, Jan. 9.
The Scarlet Knights received strong all-around performances from sophomore Beth Fittery (Denver, PA) and senior Nicci Bradder (Dover, NH). Fittery won the all-around competition with a score of 38.375, while Bradder placed third, scoring a 37.925.
Bradder and sophomore Jacki Campbell (Wheatley Heights, NY) helped lead RU to a victory on the balance beam with a second place tie, scoring a 9.700. Rutgers rounded out the top five with Fittery taking fourth (9.600), followed by junior Gina Roselle (Tinton Falls, NJ) in fifth place (9.575). The Scarlet Knights also secured a win in the floor exercise behind a sterling performance from Fittery, who scored a 9.775 and finished third. In fourth place was sophomore Kelly Straka (Fairless Hills, PA) with a sore of 9.725 and making her return to action following an early season-ending injury was junior Erin Lynch (Mullica Hill, NJ), who scored a 9.700 in her first competition since 2003.
On the vault, Rutgers was led by sophomore Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, GA) in fifth place with a 9.500 and on the bars, senior Stephanie Zick (Pittsburgh, PA) was the team’s high scorer in third place with a 9.725.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, when they will travel to Raliegh, NC to take on N.C. State and James Madison in a tri-meet.
