Rutgers Gymnastics Edges EAGL Foe New Hampshire

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers University gymnastics team (1-0, 1-0 EAGL) squeaked past fellow East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) member New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at the Livingston Recreation Center.
The Scarlet Knights trailed the Wildcats entering the fourth and final rotation, but RU battled back and eventually secured the victory, topping New Hampshire by a score of 189.250-189.225, a margin of victory of just .025 points.
Leading the way for RU was the squad's top all-arounder, junior Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, GA). Johnson finished second in the all-around competition with a combined score of 38.075 points.
Johnson also tied with teammate and senior co-captain Gina Roselle (Tinton Falls, NJ) for second place on the balance beam, as they each recorded a score of 9.675. Junior Beth Fittery (Denver, PA) posted a 9.575 to finish second in the floor exercise, followed by senior Erin Lynch (Mullica Hill, NJ) in third with a 9.550.
Rutgers also received strong performances from its newcomers, including freshman Latara Northcutt (Snellville, GA). Northcutt won the balance beam title with a score of 9.725 and was the Scarlet Knights' top competitor on the vault, recording a fifth-place finish with a score of 9.550.
'I'm really proud of the team's effort and how they pulled together,' said head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton. 'We lost one of our best all-arounders in Stephanie Pannick and to lose someone the day before a meet means that others have to step up and they did. We are a young team and they hung in there.'
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14, when they take on EAGL opponent North Carolina State at Reynolds Coliseum.
