RU Gymnastics Falls Short of Second USAG National Championship

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers University gymnastics team tallied 190.225 points, finishing .50 points shy of qualifying for the finals of the 2006 USAG Collegiate National Championships on Thursday, April 13. The Scarlet Knights, who competed among seven other teams at Newman Arena on the campus of Cornell University, had five gymnasts earn All-America honors.
The top four teams to advance to the finals, which will be held on Friday afternoon, were UC Davis (191.475), Texas Women's University (191.250), Cornell (190.700) and William and Mary (190.275).
Junior Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, GA) received All-America honors and advanced to the finals of the balance beam and vault competitions with a 9.825 (second) and 9.700 (fifth), respectively. Junior Casey Santangelo (Cherry Hill, NJ) and senior Gina Roselle (Tinton Falls, NJ) also moved on to participate in Saturday's beam competition, as Santangelo took third with a 9.775, followed by Roselle in eight with a 9.750.
Thursday's all-around competition also served as the finals with junior Beth Fittery (Denver, PA) taking sixth (37.550) followed by freshman Latara Northcutt (Snellville, GA) in seventh (37.525). Fittery also scored a 9.700 to finish seventh in the floor exercise and advance to the finals.
Gymnasts earned All-America certificates after finishing in the top eight of each event. The qualifying gymnasts will compete in the individual event finals on Saturday, April 15.
The Scarlet Knights finished sixth at the 2006 NCAA Northeast Regional held in Ann Arbor, MI, on Saturday, April 8. Rutgers also finished seventh at the 2006 East Atlantic Gymnastic League Championship and concluded the regular season with four gymnasts collecting post-season accolades.
Fittery was tabbed the EAGL Scholar Athlete of the Year, while Northcutt and Johnson were each selected to the All-EAGL Vault second team and Roselle was picked for the second team All-Balance Beam.
