Adamcsik Places Seventh at University Freestyle Nationals

AKRON, Ohio - Rutgers wrestlers Steve Adamcsik (Chester, N.J.), Jack Barrett (Metuchen, N.J.), and Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) competed in the ASICS Men's FILA Cadet & University National Championships April 20-22 at the Athletics Field House on the campus of the University of Akron.
In the opening round, Adamcsik, representing New York Athletic Club, defeated Clint Sponseller by technical fall, 6-0, 7-0.
Despite a second-round loss, Adamcsik took seventh at the 70 KG weight class, including a pair of big wins over opponents from Iowa and Lehigh. Adamcsik had defeated Air Force's Tony Dorward in his first match in a 4-0, 5-1 decision, before registering the win over Iowa's Matt Ballweg 2-3, 1-1, 6-0.
Adamscik picked up three more wins on the day before falling 6-0, 6-0 to Bloomsburg's Dennis Bermudez. The Rutgers standout secured his seventh-place finish in the bracket with a 4-1. 5-1 decision over Lehigh's Trevor Chinn.
Also in the 70 KG bracket, Barrett posted a win in the first round, defeating Andy Hall, 4-3, 2-1, but fell in the second match to Spencer Manley by fall (1:04).
Barrett won his first consolation match with a 6-5, 6-0 decision and the second by pin, before dropping the third to Illinois' Danny Zeman by a score of 0-6, 0-7.
Whalen competed in the 84 KG weight class, dropping a tight 1-0, 1-0 decision in his first match.
