Rutgers Gymnastics Takes Second at Tri-Meet

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers gymnastics team kicked off the 2008 season with a second place finish in an extremely close tri-meet between the Scarlet Knights, New Hampshire, and Bridgeport Saturday afternoon at the newly-renovated Livingston Recreation Center.
Rutgers finished with 183.450 total team points, just 8.025 points behind first place New Hampshire. Bridgeport took third place with a score of 177.075.
Sophomore Laura Sevarino (Cheshire Conn.) posted RU's best result of the day as she placed second on the vault. Her score of 9.775 was just shy of New Hampshire's Helena Diodati's mark of 9.800. Latara Northcutt (Snellville, Ga.) also posted a top-10 finish in the rotation, placing eighth.
Tiffany Schramm (Orange County, Calif.) was the team's top finisher on the balance beam, taking fifth with a score of 9.325. Schramm also tallied a top-10 finish on the uneven parallel bars with an eighth place finish. New Hampshire captured the top spot in each event with Taryn LaFountain posting the top score on the balance beam and Kelsey Alwin winning the uneven parallel bars event.
Rutgers performed well in the floor exercises, taking home three top-10 finishes. Maddie Zwiebel (Bridgewater, N.J.), Elizabeth Bohnasck (Pasadena, Md.), and Sevarino finshed in the 5-7 slots. New Hampshire's Keeley Smith won the event with a score of 9.800.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Penn. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
