BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Rutgers wrestling team (6-3) took second in the Hoosier Duals, Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. The Scarlet Knights finished with a record of 4-1, their lone loss coming to No. 18 Indiana. The Hoosiers placed first in the round-robin tournament with a record of 5-0.
“It was a pretty good day for us,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “We are excited because we wrestled well and knocked off some nationally ranked guys. We are beating tough opponents and we are winning close matches. We are doing all the little things right and having success. It was not ideal circumstances to wrestle five matches in one day, but we did it and we did it well, so it is another positive step for us.”
RU started the day with a 25-9 victory over Liberty. After dropping three of the first four bouts, the Scarlet Knights reeled off six consecutive victories to pick up the win. Junior Keith Dobish (Lodi, N.J.) defeated the No. 16 ranked 184-pound wrestler, Christopher Daggett. Sophomore Mike Demarco (Lyndhurst, N.J.) picked up a major decision at 125, and Winston, Pletcher, Dobish, Mahmoud and Russo all won to give RU the eight-point victory. Rutgers then took on the host school, falling to No. 18 Indiana 29-9. Winston won by decision and Russo pinned the No. 15 ranked heavyweight, Nate Everhart, for the Scarlet Knights.
