Rutgers Wrestling Competes in EIWA Championships

LANCASTER, PA. - Members of the Rutgers wrestling team, under the guidance of first-year head coach Scott Goodale, competed in the first session of the EIWA Championships at the Mayser Center on the campus of Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa., on Saturday morning.
Four Scarlet Knights earned victories to move to the second round. Senior Steve Adamcsik (Chester, N.J.) earned a 7-4 decision over Lehigh's Jeff Santo at 141. Adamcsik, the No. 3 seed, will face the No. 6 seed Richard Rappo of Penn, who had a first-round bye. At 165-pounds, No. 6 seed Matt Pletcher (Eastampton, N.J.) defeated Franklin & Marshall's Andrew Smith 7-1 at 165-pounds, and will face No. 3 seed Zach Shanaman of Penn.
At 184-pounds, Keith Dobish (Lodi, N.J.), the No. 8 seed, defeated Princeton's Anthony Salerno 6-2. Dobish will next take on No. 1 seed Scott Ferguson of Army. Junior Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.), the No. 6 seed at 197, earned a first-round bye and will wrestle against the No. 3 seed Nick Sommerfield of Columbia. In the heavyweight division, Karim Mahmoud (Wallington, N.J.) upset the No. 8 seed George Hingson of Bucknell, 3-2. Mahmoud will square off against the No. 1 seed and No. 4 ranked heavyweight wrestler in the nation, Navy's Ed Prendergast. Earlier this season Prendergast pinned Mahmoud in the Midshipmen's 29-6 over Rutgers on Feb. 15.
Mike DeMarco (Lyndhurst, N.J.) at 125, Dan Hilt (Manalapan, N.J.) at 133, Jack Barrett (Metuchen, N.J.) at 149, Chris Norrell (Phillipsburg, N.J.) at 157 and Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) all fell in the first round and will try to avoid elimination in the second session, set to start at 1:30 p.m.
