Rutgers Gymnastics Edged by New Hampshire In EAGL Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – The Rutgers gymnastics team began competition for the 2009 season with a dual meet against East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foe New Hampshire on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Durham, N.H. The Wildcats topped the Scarlet Knights 191.575-185.275 in what was also their home opener at Lundholm Gymnasium.
Junior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) and senior Latara Northcutt (Snellville, Ga.) each recorded third-place marks in their respective events to help pace the Scarlet Knights’ effort against New Hampshire. Sevarino scored a 9.800 on the balance beam, while Northcutt posted a 9.525 on the uneven bars for the two-highest finishes for RU.
Sevarino and Northcutt competed in all four events for the Scarlet Knights, accumulating all-around scores of 37.725 and 37.625, respectively. Sevarino scored a 9.625 (sixth) in the vault, 9.250 (fifth) on the bars and 9.050 (sixth) on floor. Northcutt recorded marks of 9.600 (t-seventh) in the vault, 9.650 (t-fourth) on beam and 8.850 (ninth) on the floor exercise.
Rounding out the remaining top performances for Rutgers were sophomore Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) in the vault (t-seventh) with a 9.600, junior Prishani Seebadri (Wenonah, N.J.) on the bars (sixth) with an 8.975 and sophomore Maddie Zwiebel (Bridgewater, N.J.) on the beam (t-fourth) with a 9.650.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Friday, Jan. 16 for the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, hosted by fellow EAGL member George Washington in Washington, D.C.
