Q&A with Jessica Haddaway
Jan 15 | Women's Gymnastics
When did you first get started in gymnastics?
I started gymnastics when I was just 2.
What got you interested in gymnastics?
The story is- my neighbors noticed that I was extra energetic, strong and had a good sense of balance for a toddler, and they suggested to my parents that I take gymnastics classes.
What is your favorite event and why?
It's hard to pick! Every event except vault has been my favorite at some point. I guess I'll pick bars...and beam...and floor!!! They all present their own different challenges and rewards.
What has been your favorite thing about the Rutgers program so far?
My favorite thing about the Rutgers gymnastics program is kind of hard to describe. I just really appreciate and am grateful for the overall atmosphere here. The coaching and athletic training staff is so supportive even beyond gymnastics and my teammates are all there for me. Not to mention that our training facility has gone from great to even better over the past 3 years.
What made you decide to come to Rutgers?
It met all my requirements! It had a strong program for my desired major (Communication), a gymnastics program that would challenge me but support me and it was close enough to home (but not too close).
What is your favorite thing to do outside of gymnastics?
I honestly love to read and write! I also love to spend time with my teammates going out to dinner or just watching TV together,
If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and why?
Anyone! Anyone I meet can teach me something new about the world and about myself.
What is something interesting that most people don't know about you?
Most people don't know that I really wish I could be a football player. I would want to be a linebacker!!!
What is your major and what is your desired profession upon graduation?
I am a Communication major and hope to pursue a career in public relations after I (hopefully) serve for Teach for America- a non-profit organization that would place me in an underprivileged/underserved school district to teach for two years.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Wherever my life takes me! I know I will be somewhere doing the best I can at whatever I'm doing and being happy.
