Rutgers Gymnastics Places Second In Quad Meet

Rutgers began the meet in the vault with top performances from sophomores Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Nicole Rose (Maple Shade, N.J.). With season-high marks of 9.625 and 9.600, respectively, Banfield finished fifth and Rose placed seventh. After the first event, the Scarlet Knights surged to an early lead with a score of 47.725.
Seniors Latara Northcutt (Snellville, Ga.) and Kristy Behr (Northport, N.Y.) led the way for the Scarlet Knights on the bars.
Sophomore Maddie Zwiebel (Bridgewater N.J.) tied her career high on the beam to lead RU. Zwiebel?s mark of 9.650 earned her a fifth place finish in the event.
Rutgers finished off the day in the floor exercise with top five performances from freshman Danae Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.), Rose and Banfield. Johnson?s second-place score of 9.725 in the floor exercise was a career high.
For the second straight meet, Northcutt was the only Rutgers gymnasts to compete in the all-around, posting a season-high score of 38.200 to finish second overall. The senior recorded a 9.475 in the vault, and season-high marks of 9.675 on bar, 9.550 on the beam, and a 9.500 in the floor exercise. Her score in bars placed her third in the event.
Rutgers continues its 2009 season with a road meet against Bridgeport and Temple on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
