Rutgers Gymnastics Announces 2009 Recruiting Class

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 17, 2009) – Rutgers head gymnastics coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton has announced the signing of Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) and Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) to National Letters of Intent.
A Columbian National Team member, Leal took first place in the all-around at the Columbian Junior Elite National Championships after second-place finishes in 2006 and 2007. She is a United States Regional Qualifier after placing first in the uneven bars and second on the floor and vault as well as the all-around. Leal is also a United States National Qualifier with a ninth-place finish in the floor exercise and 10th-place finish in the vault earlier this year. Leal trains in the United States at the Indigo Gymnastics Training Center in New Providence, N.J.
“Luisa will be a major impact player for our program,” said Chollet-Norton. “Her international competition experience will help to lead our program to the next level. Her strong skills and competition level will guide our program to a regional berth in the upcoming seasons. Luisa has been training in our country and our state for the past two seasons with her coach. We are really excited that she has chosen Rutgers as her college choice in the fall of 2010.”
Straub is a United States Regional Qualifier after taking first place in the floor exercise and second place in the vault earlier this season. She was the national vault champion after capturing first place at the event this year to become a National Qualifier. Straub is a four-year United States Level 10 state qualifier. She trains at the prestigious Parkettes National Training Center in Allentown, Pa.
“Alyssa will be one of our top all arounders next season,” said Chollet-Norton. “Her outstanding vaulting skills and floor skills will add the additional depth we need to take our program to the next level. Alyssa comes from an outstanding Region 7 club program (National Team) that trains the top elite gymnasts in the country. We are excited to have Alyssa as a member of our team and the Rutgers Athletics.”
Rutgers opens the 2010 season Saturday, Jan. 9 against New Hampshire inside the Livingston Recreation Center.
