BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2009) – The Rutgers wrestling team captured two dominating victories and fell two points short of knocking off No. 19 Penn State Sunday at the Sprawl and Brawl Duals at Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y.
RU (3-1) split its matches against No. 19 Penn State (4-1) but PSU squeaked by with an 18-17 score in the opening match. The Scarlet Knights quickly rebounded with a strong 42-6 victory over Scared Heart (1-4). RU claimed a convincing 25-10 win against Northern Iowa (1-4) in its final match.
Junior Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) andredshirt junior Dominick Russo (Netcong, N.J,) played huge roles in Rutgers’ successful outing as Ashnault went 3-0 with two pins and Russo knocked off two top-20 wrestlers. Russo is 7-0 on the season and has won four straight matches against ranked wrestlers.
Ashnalt is 7-1 in his first season as a Scarlet Knight and four of his seven victories have come by pin fall.
“Billy has been great all year for us,” said Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale. “He has scored a lot of bonus points and he really got after it today with two pins. He has brought a lot to our lineup.”
Rutgers jumped out to a 7-3 advantage against Penn State behind a decision from Ashnault at 133and a major decision from sophomore Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) at 141.
The Nittany Lions stole the momentum with major decisions at 149 and 157 to go up 11-7.
Redshirt freshman Daniel Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) closed the gap with RU’s second of three major decisions of the match with a 15-5 win against Michael Lorenzo at 174.

Russoknocked off No. 19 Cameron Wade by a 6-0 decision in the final contest of the Penn State match.
“It was a good match against Penn State and it came down to bonus points,” said Goodale.“They have three All-Americans and just maybe one or two more weapons than us. I feel we missed out on an opportunity. We certainly aren’t satisfied with the final result but we will continue to work and improve.”
Against Sacred Heart, Rutgers won nine matches, including five by pin, for a 42-6 victory. RU earned pin falls from Ashnault, Greenwald, Rinaldi, Daniel Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) and Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.).
