PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers gymnastics team will host Bridgeport and Alaska-Anchorage Saturday inside the Livingston Recreation Center in a tri-meet at 7:00 p.m. The event will serve as a “Pink” meet for the Scarlet Knights, where donations will be collected at the meet to support breast cancer awareness.
Saturday’s meet will be televised live by RUTV, the campus television station. A listing of air times will be released as soon as they are made available.
Rutgers placed fourth at Penn State in their last meet, posting a score of 187.525 last Saturday evening.
The Scarlet Knights have been led by the freshman duo of Danae Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) and Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.). Johnson is averaging a 9.534 in the floor exercise and her score of 9.875 in the last home meet was the top mark on the year for RU in the event. Schwartz has filled in for the sidelined Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) as an all-around performer, competing in all four events at the last three meets. She has averaged at least a 9.300 in every event on the year, while averaging a 9.650 on the beam in the last three meets. Both Johnson and Schwartz have earned a first place finish in the floor exercise and beam, respectively, this season.
Junior Alyssa Lewandowski’s (Linden, N.J.) consistency in the vault has led to the team’s success in the event throughout the season. Lewandowski has yet to post a score below 9.475. She has RU’s top average in a single event with a mark of 9.564. In the meet at Cortland earlier this month, she posted a season-high score in the floor exercise with a 9.650, taking first place honors in the event.
Alaska-Anchorage is 3-7 on the season, coming off a pair of victories over Temple at home last weekend. Bridgeport is 10-8 on the year, coming off a win over Rhode Island on Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights faced Bridgeport twice earlier this season, dropping a pair of decisions to the Purple Knights. RU is 9-4 all-time against Bridgeport. The Scarlet Knights and Purple Knights will face each other again March 14 in Towson, Md., in Rutgers’ final meet of the regular season.
This will be the first meeting between Rutgers and Alaska-Anchorage.
The Scarlet Knights will host Cornell Saturday, March 7, in the final home meet of the 2009 season. The meet is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Livingston Recreation Center with a Senior Day ceremony to be held prior to competition.
