NC State Tops Rutgers Gymnastics

RALEIGH, N.C. (January 15, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team dropped a 193.825 – 188.100 decision to defending EAGL champion NC State Friday evening in front of 2,516 fans inside Reynolds Coliseum.
Senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Scarlet Knights to a score of 47.750 in the vault with a 9.725 to place third in the event. Fellow senior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) tied for sixth in the event with a 9.600. NC State’s Brooke Barr captured the vault title with a 9.825.
Sevarino was third overall in the floor exercise with a 9.700 to guide Rutgers to a score of 47.725 in the event. Junior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) continued her strong performance in the event with a 9.650 to place fifth. Taylor Seaman of NC State took first place with a 9.875.
Sophomore Erica “Sunny” Gerlach (Papillion, Neb.) posted a 9.625 to lead RU on the uneven parallel bars and place fifth in the event as the Scarlet Knights recorded a 46.075. Seaman scored a 9.800 to take top honors in the event.
Freshman Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights with a 9.525 on the balance beam to place seventh in the event as RU finished with a team score of 46.550 in the event. Seaman led all scorers with a 9.825.
Three Scarlet Knights competed in the all-around with Sevarino leading the trio with a 37.450. Freshmen Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) and Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) recorded a 37.200 and 36.925, respectively. Seaman led all scorers in the all-around with a 39.100.
Rutgers returns to action next Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa. with a 1:00 p.m. meet against Penn.
