PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 22, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team will step outside of EAGL play Saturday as the Scarlet Knights travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Penn at 1:00 p.m. inside Hutchinson Gymnasium.
RU hopes to bounce back from last Friday’s defeat at NC State with a victory against the Quakers Saturday. Senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) had a strong performance in the vault and floor exercise last time out with a 9.725 and a 9.700, respectively, to place third in both events. She hopes to build on her performance in each event Saturday.
The Scarlet Knights have seen contributions from four members of their highly-touted freshman class in the first two meets with Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) and Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) each competing in the all-around. The pair joined Sevarino as all-around competitors in each meet. Zito recorded a 37.800, while Romano posted a 37.650 in the season opener against New Hampshire.
Fellow freshman Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) has competed on the bars and the balance beam in each of the first two meets, while Jayne Jeffreys (Jackson, N.J.) made her collegiate debut on bars at NC State last Friday.
Saturday marks the 2010 home opener for Penn. The Quakers opened the season last Sunday with a sixth-place finish at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational at George Washington University. Penn posted a score of 179.550 in the event, competing without several of its top performers due to injuries. The Quakers were led by Katie Graham with a 9.600 on the beam.
The Scarlet Knights will compete in their second home meet of the season next Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m. against Temple inside the Livingston Recreation Center. Scarletknights.com is planning to broadcast the meet live through KnightVision.
