PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 26, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team looks for its second-straight victory over a team from the neighboring state of Pennsylvania when it hosts Temple Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. inside the Livingston Recreation Center.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 190.725 – 185.100 victory over the University of Pennsylvania on the road this past Saturday. The score was a season-high for RU and its highest mark since a 192.050 performance against Bridgeport and Alaska-Anchorage on February 28 of last year.
Senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) continues to impress this season after missing nearly all of the 2009 campaign due to injury. She took first place in the floor exercise and the vault en route to a career-best 38.625 in the all-around last time out against Pennsylvania.
Sevarino and junior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) have paced the Scarlet Knights in the floor exercise with each gymnast averaging at least a 9.700 in the event. Sevarino has averaged a 9.733, while Banfield has averaged a 9.700 through three meets this season.
On the vault, Sevarino leads the way with an average of 9.692, while fellow senior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) is averaging a 9.608 in the event.
Freshman Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) is averaging a team-best 9.600 on the balance beam, while sophomore Erica “Sunny” Gerlach (Papillion, Neb.) is averaging a team-best 9.375 on the uneven bars.
Temple comes to Piscataway on the heels of a third-place finish with a 188.900 at the Ursinus quad meet this past Sunday that also included Bridgeport and Towson. Sophomore Corrine Williams lead the Owls with a 9.700 in the floor exercise to place first and a 9.750 on the balance beam to finish second.
Rutgers and Temple have split the last two meetings with each school taking the victory in its home gym the past two seasons.
