Rutgers Gymnastics Places Second In Home Quad Meet

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 27, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team scored a season-high 190.875 but fell just short of winning its home quad meet against Bridgeport, William & Mary and Southern Connecticut State Saturday night in front of 821 fans on Alumni Day inside the Livingston Recreation Center. The Scarlet Knights came up .025 short of tying Bridgeport’s winning score of 190.900. The Tribe of William & Mary placed third with a 189.000 and the Owls of Southern Connecticut State were fourth with a 188.850.
Down heading into the fourth and final rotation, RU surged in the floor exercise, highlighted by junior Kiah Banfieid’s (Newbury Park, Calif.) career-best 9.900 in the floor to take the event title. Freshman Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) was right behind to tie with Bridgeport’s Breanna Collins for second with a 9.850. Senior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) posted a 9.775 to place eighth and freshman Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) scored a 9.750 to finish ninth. The 48.875 in the floor for the Scarlet Knights was a season-high for RU.
Senior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) and Zito posted a 9.800 on the vault to tie for third on the vault, just behind the Bridgeport duo of Tiara Land (9.875) and Monica Mesalles (9.825). Senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) tied for sixth on the vault with a 9.750. RU also posted a season-high score on the vault with a 48.550.
Freshmen Jayne Jeffreys (Jackson, N.J.) and Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, on the bars with scores of 9.600 and 9.500 to pace RU in the event. William & Mary took the top two spots with Teenie Beck winning the event with a score of 9.775.
The freshman duo of Trentacosti and Zito tied for fifth on the beam with a score of 9.500 to lead RU. Emily Repko of Bridgeport and Beck of William & Mary tied for the beam title with a 9.600.
Three Scarlet Knights competed in the all-around with Zito placing third overall with a season-best score of 38.475. Fellow freshman Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) posted an all-around score of 37.350 and Sevarino scored a 36.300.
Rutgers will return to action next Saturday, March 6, as the Scarlet Knights travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face Cornell at 1 p.m.
