PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 28, 2010) – Rutgers gymnastics signee Luisa Leal (Cali, Colombia) recorded several standout performances as a member of the Colombian National Team at the trials earlier this month and has qualified for the Gymnastics World Championships.
Leal captured first place in the vault and in the floor exercise and placed second on the bars and beam with a third-place finish in the all-around at the team trials. With her performances, the gymnast has qualified for the Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, which will be held from Oct. 16-24. The Ahoy Arena will serve as the venue for the event.
The Gymnastics World Championships will be a prime venue for the best gymnasts from around the world and will serve as a qualifying event for the 2010 London Olympics. More than 70 nations are expected to be represented at the event.
Leal is one of two Rutgers signees for the 2010 recruiting class, joining Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.). Both will enroll at Rutgers and compete with the Scarlet Knights in the fall.
Rutgers completed a banner season in which 10 Scarlet Knights were named USA Gymnastics All-Americans and 18 RU gymnastics student-athletes were named to the EAGL All-Academic Team including 10 USA Gymnastics Scholar Athletes. Rutgers advanced to the finals at the USAG Collegiate National Championships and finished fourth overall at Nationals for its best finish since 2005. During the year, RU posted its highest team score since 2005 with a 192.675 in a home meet against Towson, Bridgeport and Yale.
