PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 25, 2011) – Rutgers sophomore gymnast Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Specialist of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
The sophomore, in her first season with the Scarlet Knights after transferring to Rutgers from Central Michigan, won all three of the events she competed in to help guide RU to a quad meet victory over North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Brown this past Saturday at the Livingston Recreation Center. She guided Rutgers to a season-high team score of 192.050 and its first victory over top EAGL foe North Carolina since 1976.
D’Elia won three of the four events in Saturday’s meet, capturing first place on the bars with a score of 9.825, on the balance beam with a score of 9.750 and sharing first place with teammate Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) in the floor exercise with a score of 9.850. Each score was a career-high mark for the sophomore.
The weekly honor marked the first time a Scarlet Knight was represented in the EAGL weekly awards since Jan. 16, 2007 when Laura Sevarino (2007-10) was named the EAGL Rookie of the Week.
Austyn Fobes of New Hampshire was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week, while Hope Sloanhoffer of West Virginia was named the EAGL Freshman of the Week.
The Scarlet Knights return to action this Saturday as they travel to Morgantown, W. Va. to take on West Virginia and Pittsburgh in a tri-meet slated to begin at 7 p.m.
