NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (October 15, 2011) – Rutgers wrestling officially began its fall practices Monday inside College Ave Gym in preparation for the 2011-12 season. Looking back on the first practices of the year, RU head coach Scott Goodale praised his wrestlers for an outstanding opening week.
“The first week has been great,” Goodale said. “We’ve been working on more up-tempo workouts with more match-speed training.”
Entering his fifth season at the helm of the Scarlet Knight wrestling program, Goodale is assisted by coaches John Leonardis, Joe Pollard and volunteer coach Tyler Turner. Goodale has amassed a stellar 71-21-1 dual record at Rutgers, including a school-record 21 wins in 2011-12.
Goodale went into detail when explaining what the Rutgers wrestlers have focused on in their early training sessions.
“We have continued to stress technique in specific situations,” Goodale said. “We’ve started to concentrate on some of the new rules and our tactics towards them. Our staff here at Rutgers has been energetic and excited every day to help this team and this program.”
Rutgers wrestling fans are encouraged to attend the Scarlet vs. Black Wrestle-Offs on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. The wrestle-offs help in determining RU’s starting positions on the team. The event provides fans the opportunity to see the entire squad in action prior to the beginning of the season. Admission is free.
Rutgers begins the 2011-12 wrestling season on the road at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic on Saturday, Nov. 12. The Scarlet Knights’ first home dual is set for Friday, Dec. 2 against Old Dominion at 6:30 p.m. in the RAC.
