Rutgers Wrestling Gets Two Wins at Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. (November 26, 2011) - The 14th-ranked Rutgers wrestling team began dual competition for the 2011-12 season with two wins at the Northeast Duals on Saturday inside the Edward F. McDonough Sports Complex at Hudson Valley Community College. Led by fifth-year head coach Scott Goodale, RU defeated North Carolina (33-9) and Purdue (28-15) before falling in a tightly contested dual to Central Michigan by a score of 16-15.
RU (2-1) saw standout performances from 149-pounder Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.), 165-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.), 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) and 197-pounder Daniel Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.). The four Scarlet Knights posted unblemished records in the event.
Ranked fourth in the country according to Intermat, Mason recorded a major decision and two decision victories. The RU 149-pounder defeated UNC's Jon Burns, 3-2, then recorded an 18-6 win over Purdue's Frankie Porras before ending the day with a 10-4 victory over Joey Kielbasa of Central Michigan.
Winston, rated as the seventh-best in his weight class nationally, notched two wins by decision and a forfeit. He turned away Purdue's Kyle Mosier, 5-3, and Mike Ottinger of Central Michigan by a score of 6-1.
At 174 pounds, Zannetti earned two wins by decision and a forfeit. The 15-ranked wrestler in his weight class, he defeated Drake Stein of Purdue by a score of 12-5 and CMU's Anthony Bill, 13-6.
Up a weight class from his previous spot of 184 pounds, Rinaldi was on his game at 197 pounds. The Scarlet Knight decisioned UNC's Nick Tenpenny (3-0), pinned Purdue's Justin Dinius (5:39) and won by decision over Central Michigan's Chad Friend (8-3).
To start the day, it was RU's Anthony Volpe (Miller Place, N.Y.) who earned bonus points to help in downing the Tar Heels 33-9. Volpe stuck UNC's Corey Mock for the fall in the first period at the 1:50 mark.
Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) and Rinaldi came up big against the Boilermakers. Both Scarlet Knights recorded pins to contribute six points each to RU's 28-15 effort. Ashnault turned his foe, Jake Fleckenstein, to the mat at the 1:39 mark to score the fastest pin of the day for Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights next bring wrestling action to the RAC for the first time of the 2011-12 season.
