
Mason Takes Runner-Up at Midlands, RU Places 11th

EVANSTON, Ill. (December 30, 2011) - The No. 16 Rutgers wrestling team finished tied for 11th place at the 49th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Saturday in Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Scarlet Knights concluded the two-day tournament with three individual placewinners, including Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.), who finished as runner-up in the 149-pound division.
Mason compiled a 4-1 record in the tournament to improve his 2011-12 season mark to 13-0 overall. Mason was stopped in the tournament finals by Jake Patacsil, a post-graduation competitior who was an All-American at 149 pounds for Purdue in 2009. Teammates Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) and Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) earned eighth-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Ashnault went 3-3 in the 141-pound bracket, while Winston posted a 3-2 mark at 165 pounds before ending his tournament with a medical forfeit.
RU finished with 47.5 team points to tie with Central Michigan and Clarion. Iowa took the team title with 152 points. Host school Northwestern finished as team runner-up with 105.5 points.
Rutgers returns to College Avenue Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 6 to face Brown and Harvard at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
