
Rutgers Gymnastics Travels to Cortland Saturday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 10, 2011) – The Rutgers gymnastics team will travel to Cortland, N.Y. Saturday for a 2 p.m. meet inside Corey Gymnasium.
The Scarlet Knights enter the weekend 10-5 overall after taking first place in a tri-meet against Yale and Ithaca in Connecticut on Sunday. Freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) won the all-around, vault, bars and floor exercise titles to guide RU to the tri-meet victory. The Scarlet Knights posted a team score of 190.575 to take first place over second-place Yale’s 184.975 and third-place Ithaca’s 177.925. Leal-Restrepo scored a 38.775 in the all-around, a career-best 9.875 in the floor exercise, a 9.800 on the vault and a 9.700 on the bars to capture each event.
Fellow freshman Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) made her debut in the all-around last Friday and has competed in every event in each of the last two meets. She posted a score of 38.825 in the all-around in Friday’s home meet against Brown and Bridgeport and a score of 37.975 against Yale and Ithaca on Sunday.
Leal-Restrepo is averaging a team-best 9.754 on the vault, while Straub is right behind with an average of 9.633 in the event. Sophomores Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) lead the Scarlet Knights on bars with an average score of 9.558 and 9.515, respectively. Straub is averaging a team-best 9.460 on the balance beam for RU. The Scarlet Knights’ best event is the floor exercise where they are averaging a team total of 48.613. Leal-Restrepo is averaging a team-best score of 9.804 in the floor exercise. D’Elia is averaging a 9.754, while senior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) is averaging a 9.750 in the event.
Cortland is coming off a 184.200 – 179.750 victory over Springfield College at home last Sunday. Sophomore Sarah Nadrowski won three events and the all-around in the meet. She posted an all-around score of 37.900 and a 9.600 to win the floor exercise, a 9.450 to win the bars and a 9.325 to take the balance beam title.
The Scarlet Knights defeated Cortland 189.400 – 182.250 in their lone meeting last season.
