
Rutgers Gymnastics Places Third In Maryland Quad Meet

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Feb. 18, 2011) – The Rutgers gymnastics team recorded its second-highest score of the season with a 192.975 to place third in a quad meet against No. 18 Penn State (196.600), Maryland (195.300) and William & Mary (186.975) Friday night inside the Comcast Center on the University of Maryland campus.
Freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) and sophomore Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) paced Rutgers in the floor exercise with a 9.875 and 9.825, respectively. Leal-Restrepo tied for third in the event with Penn State’s Maddie Merriam, while D’Elia placed fifth. Sharaya Musser of Penn State captured the event title with a score of 9.950.
Leal-Restrepo scored a 9.825 to lead the Scarlet Knights on the vault and place sixth overall in the event. Merriam and Maryland’s Katy Dodds tied for the event title with a score of 9.925. RU freshman Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) posted a score of 9.775, while senior Maddie Zwiebel (Bridgewater, N.J.) and freshman Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) each recorded a score of 9.725 on the vault.
D’Elia and Straub posted identical scores of 9.725 to pace the Scarlet Knights to a season-high team score of 48.400 on the balance beam. The RU duo tied for eighth overall in the event. Gunzelman was right behind with a 9.700 in the event. Musser took home the balance beam crown with a score of 9.925.
Leal-Restrepo led Rutgers on the bars with a score of 9.725 to place 10th overall in the event. Penn State’s Natalie Ettl scored a 9.975 to capture the bars title.
Leal-Restrepo and Gunzelman each competed in the all-around for RU. Leal-Restrepo scored a 39.025 to place fifth overall, while Gunzelman recorded a 38.700 to place sixth overall. Musser won the all-around with a score of 39.575.
Rutgers will return to action next Saturday at 7 p.m. against Bridgeport and Ursinus inside the Livingston Recreation Center. The event will serve as the Scarlet Knights’ alumni meet.
