
Rutgers Gymnastics Hosts Bridgeport & Ursinus Saturday Night

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 25, 2011) – The Rutgers gymnastics team will host Bridgeport and Ursinus Saturday at 7 p.m. inside the Livingston Recreation Center on campus. The Scarlet Knights will welcome gymnasts from years past to the event as Saturday will serve as RU’s alumni meet.
The event will also serve as a “Pink Meet” for Rutgers where the Scarlet Knights will wear pink hair ribbons in recognition of breast cancer awareness. The Rutgers gymnastics program will collect donations at the entrance to the event to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation For the Cure of Central and South Jersey.
Rutgers is averaging a score of 191.888 this season after posting a team score of 192.975 in its last meet last Friday night at Maryland. The Scarlet Knights placed third in a highly-competitive meet against No. 18 Penn State, Maryland and William & Mary. Freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) has competed in the all-around in all eight meets for RU with an average score of 38.556. Fellow freshman Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) has recorded an average score of 37.719 in the all-around during four meets this season. Another freshman, Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.), has averaged a score of 37.910 in the all-around in five meets on the year. Sophomore Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) has averaged a score of 38.138 in the all-around in six meets this season.
Prior to this weekend, Bridgeport has not competed since Feb. 12 when the Purple Knights edged Air Force, 192.425 – 192.400 on the road. Sophomore Monica Mesalles captured the all-around title in the meet with a score of 38.925. The Purple Knights will host New Hampshire Friday night prior to their trip to Rutgers Saturday evening.
Saturday will be Bridgeport’s second trip to Rutgers this season. On Feb. 4, the Scarlet Knights placed second to Bridgeport at the Livingston Recreation Center. Bridgeport scored a 191.975 to edge Rutgers’ score of 191.225 in the meet.
In its last meet, Ursinus placed fifth in the five-team meet host by Towson last Sunday against Penn, Towson, Cornell and Temple. The Bears scored a 185.050 in the meet. Sophomore Johanna Warren scored a 37.675 and freshman Monica Durham recorded a 37.425 in the all-around for the Bears in the meet.
