PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 1, 2011) – Rutgers freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week, the group announced Tuesday.
“We are very proud of Luisa’s accomplishment as we are of each of our student-athletes this past weekend,” head gymnastics coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton said. “She is well deserving of this honor. We hope Luisa and the rest of the program continue to perform at a high level as we head into our final two meets before the EAGL Championships.”
Leal-Restrepo led the Scarlet Knights to their third-highest score in school history and highest mark in more than 10 years with a 194.150 to win a tri-meet against Bridgeport and Ursinus this past Saturday inside the Livingston Recreation Center.
The freshman set a school record score in the all-around with a 39.375 to place first overall. She topped the previous mark of 39.300 set by Katie Russo exactly 11 years ago to the day on Saturday. The freshman also captured the bars, balance beam and floor exercise titles in the meet. She scored an event-best 9.875 in the floor exercise. Leal-Restrepo recorded career-best scores of 9.825 on both the bars and balance beam to win the event. She scored a 9.850 on the vault to place second overall.
Tuesday marked the second time this season the freshman has been recognized by the league. Leal-Restrepo was named the EAGL Rookie of the Week on Feb. 15.
Rutgers will host Cornell, Southern Connecticut State, West Chester and Yale this Saturday at 1 p.m. inside the Livingston Recreation Center. The meet will serve as Senior Day and will be the final career home meet for Chollet-Norton, who announced her retirement at the conclusion of the season after 25 years as RU’s head coach.
