
Rutgers Gymnastics Places Second In Tri-Meet At Towson

TOWSON, Md. (March 11, 2011) - The Rutgers gymnastics team scored a 190.350 to place second in a tri-meet against Towson and Yale Friday night at Towson Center in Maryland. Towson placed first in the meet with a score of 193.400, while Yale finished third with a score of 183.600.
The Scarlet Knights extended their school-record win total for the season to 19 and improved to 19-8 on the year with the second-place finish.
Sophomore Danielle D'Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) tied for first overall with Towson's Avis Hixon in the floor exercise with a score of 9.825. Senior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) placed sixth in the event with a score of 9.750, while freshman Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) was seventh with a score of 9.725.
D'Elia placed second overall on the balance beam with a score of 9.650, just behind Kacy Cantanzaro of Towson's event-winning score of 9.675. Gunzelman placed fifth in the event with a score of 9.575.
Gunzelman tied for second overall on the bars with a score of 9.625, while sophomore Jayne Jeffreys (Jackson, N.J.) placed fourth in the event with a score of 9.575. Towson's Alexa Davis captured the bars title with a score of 9.675.
Freshman Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) led the Scarlet Knights on the vault with a score of 9.725 to tie for fifth overall in the event. Sophomore Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) scored a 9.675 to place seventh overall, while senior Maddie Zwiebel (Bridgewater, N.J.) recorded a score of 9.600 to place eighth in the event. Sophomore Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) scored a 9.575 to tie for ninth.
Hixon won the vault title with a score of 9.850.
Gunzelman, Zito and Straub each competed in the all-around for Rutgers, scoring a 38.325, 38.075 and 36.600, respectively, to take the top three spots in the all-around.
Rutgers competed without its top all-around performer, freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) for the first time this season.
The Scarlet Knights will travel to Washington, D.C. for the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships next Saturday at 2 p.m. on the George Washington University campus.
