
Rutgers Gymnastics Heads To EAGL Championship

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 18, 2011) – The Rutgers gymnastics team will travel to Washington, D.C. for the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship, hosted by George Washington University Saturday. The eight-team meet will take place inside the Charles E. Smith Center on the GW campus beginning at 2 p.m.
As a team, Rutgers is averaging a 192.177 this season. All eight schools in the highly-competitive EAGL own a regional qualifying score that ranks in the top 50 in the nation. NC State’s regional qualifying score of 195.155 leads the league and ranks 25th nationally. The Scarlet Knights’ regional qualifying score of 192.915 ranks 47th nationally.
RU is coming off a second-place finish in a tri-meet against Towson and Yale where the Scarlet Knights posted a score of 190.350. Rutgers has scored above 190.000 all season and owns a season-high score of 194.350 at home on March 5, which ranks as the third-highest score in school history. RU also owns a school-record 19 wins this season with a 19-8 overall mark on the year.
Saturday will be the final EAGL Championship meet for head gymnastics coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton, who will retire at the conclusion of the season after 25 years as the Scarlet Knights’ mentor.
Freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) leads the Scarlet Knights in the all-around with a score of 38.713. She owns a team-best average score in the floor exercise (9.838), vault (9.793) and bars (9.583). Fellow freshman Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) paces RU on the balance beam with an average score of 9.550.
Rutgers’ top scoring event is the floor exercise where the Scarlet Knights own a regional qualifying score of 48.915 that ranks 29th nationally. Leal-Restrepo owns a 9.880 regional qualifying score in the event which ranks 11th best nationally.
The Scarlet Knights placed eighth in last season’s EAGL Championship with a score of 187.650.
