PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 8, 2013) - Rutgers gymnastics freshman Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) garnered the first EAGL Rookie of the Week honors of the 2013 season, the league announced Tuesday. Williams received the accolade following her collegiate debut at New Hampshire on Jan. 6.
"I think Jenna's honor is well-deserved," said head coach Louis Levine. "She really rocked her uneven bars and vault routines at New Hampshire. She is doing a great job and has done everything we have asked of her so far."
Williams helped lead Rutgers on the bars, posting a 9.850 to tie her for second place overall in the meet with junior teammate Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.). The freshman's score on the bars was tied for the highest score on any event for the Scarlet Knights against the Wildcats.
Her score helped Rutgers tally a team total of 48.900, the third-best mark in the event in program history. The Scarlet Knights' score topped New Hampshire's total of 48.700 in the same event.
The Bordentown, N.J., native was one of two Rutgers gymnasts to post a 9.800 or higher in two events, joining senior Danielle D'Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.). Williams also tallied a 9.800 on the vault for another second-place finish.
Williams and the Scarlet Knights are back in action at the Livingston Recreation Center next weekend, hosting Alaska and Yale on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
