PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 28, 2014) - Set to compete in its inaugural season as a member of the Big Ten Conference, the Rutgers gymnastics program released its 2015 schedule Tuesday. The slate includes four home meets, including one at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
"Joining the Big Ten this season is very exciting," head coach Louis Levine said. "The schedule features some very competitive meets. The team has been working hard in the offseason to prepare for the challenges ahead."
The schedule features nine regular season meets, including seven involving a conference foe, before taking part in the B1G 5 Meet March 14 against Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa and Penn State in Minneapolis, Minn. The Big Ten Championships are March 21 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
After two sellout crowds last season, the Scarlet Knights will host Senior and Alumni Day March 7 at the RAC. It will be the first gymnastics meet at the facility since 2006 when the program hosted the EAGL Championships in front of 2,524 spectators. The other three home meets will be held at the Livingston Recreation Center and feature Big Ten competition.
"We have had great support over the years and I am glad we are able to host a meet at the RAC this season," Levine said. "I'm sure it will be a great environment as our team enjoys competing in front of large crowds."
Rutgers begins its season on the road, traveling to State College, Pa., to compete against Penn State on Jan. 10 along with New Hampshire and Cornell in a quad meet. Another road highlight includes a trip to Ohio State on Feb 8. Last season, RU defeated the No. 16 Buckeyes, 195.275-194.775, on the road.
In 2014 under Levine, the Scarlet Knights enjoyed an historic campaign, registering six of the top 10 team scores in program history en route to an NCAA Regional appearance. RU reached its highest ever ranking of No. 16, knocking off three ranked teams last year in head-to-head competition. The program also sent an individual all-arounder to NCAA Nationals for the first time in program history in Alexis Gunzelman. Six Scarlet Knights earned All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) honors while Levine was named EAGL and NACG/W Head Coach of the Year. Umme Salim-Beasley earned EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year.
