Nov 17 | Wrestling
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Rutgers wrestling team continued its early open tournament success this season, as two Scarlet Knights - freshman 133-pounder Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.) and sophomore 141-pounder Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) - were crowned champs at the East Stroudsburg Open on Sunday, Nov. 16.
FULL RESULTS Dippery has now won two consecutive ESU Open titles after going 5-0 last season to take first.
For Giraldo, it was the first open title of his young career. The rookie placed third at the Clarion Open on Nov. 2 in his first collegiate action.
Giraldo rolled early with consecutive four-point decisions before overpowering Ben Peck (Muhlenberg College) with a 15-0 tech fall in the quarterfinals. That win matched up Giraldo with No. 19 (WIN Magazine) Caleb Richardson (UPenn) in the semifinals.
Giraldo was unfazed, posting a 9-1 major decision against Richardson to advance. He closed his day with another ranked win against No. 20 Kevin Devoy (Drexel), taking a nail biter, 2-1, in TB2.
Dippery's day began with a fall (0:57) against Joe Rizzi (Gloucester County College) and a 17-0 tech fall against Matt Bryer (Lock Haven) in the first two rounds. Two decisions later, Dippery found himself in the finals, where he won by forfeit against David Pearce (Drexel) for his second ESU title in a row.
Three other Scarlet Knights enjoyed solid days as top-four finishers. Redshirt freshman 184-pounder Taylor Jackson (Lady Lake, Fla.) finished as runner-up, losing to No. 4/3/3 (Intermat/Open Mat/WIN) Lorenzo Thomas (UPenn) in the finals.
Redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Tyler Hunt (South Plainfield, N.J.) placed in his first open tournament at Rutgers, going 9-1 to earn third place. Hunt dropped an 11-3 decision to Lehigh's Laike Gardner in his second match, but wrestled back with eight consecutive wins to earn his third-place finish. The streak was capped with a 5-3 decision in sudden victory against Nick Gil (US Naval Academy Prep School).
Redshirt freshman 125-pounder Josh Patrick (Rector, Pa.) ended the tournament tied for fourth with a 5-2 mark, as no fifth-place match was wrestled.
