Nov 03 | Wrestling
CLARION, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2014) - Sophomore 133-pounder Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) became the Rutgers wrestling team's first open champion of the season Sunday, posting a perfect 4-0 mark to take first place at the Clarion Open. The No. 1-seeded DelVecchio earned the title with a 6-4 decision in the finals against Jade Rauser (Utah Valley).
FULL RESULTS
The open championship is the second of DelVecchio's career after he won the National Collegiate Open at 133 pounds to end last season.
Freshman Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.) placed at 133 pounds, as well, defeating Chase Zemenak (Bloomsburg) with a 3-2 decision in the third-place match. Giraldo advanced to the semifinals before being defeated by Rauser in a close, 4-3 bout.
Rookie 149-pounder John Van Brill (Mullica Hill, N.J.) was the only other Scarlet Knight to place, finishing his day in fourth place. Van Brill went 6-2 with four major decisions on the day, dropping a 10-5 match in the quarterfinals to David Habat (Edinboro) before wrestling back to the third-place match. In that bout, he was bested, 11-3, by Joseph Galasso (Finger Lakes WC).
Making their collegiate debuts wrestling unattached at the Clarion Open were Giraldo, Van Brill, freshman 125-pounder Nicholas Ottaviano (Marlboro, N.J.), redshirt freshman 157-pounder Dylan Painton (South Plainfield, N.J.), freshman 157-pounder Vincent Corsaro (Indianapolis, Ind.), freshman 184-pounder Lucky Shaut (Columbus, Ohio), 285-pounder Wesley Bernard (Indianapolis, Ind.) and 285-pounder Nicholas LaShell (Florham Park, N.J.)
Sophomore 141-pounder Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) reached the semifinals in his side of the bracket as the No. 2 seed before suffering two injury defaults to get knocked one win shy of placing. Corsaro finished one-win shy of the 157-pound third-place match, falling by a 12-4 major decision against Edinboro's Ty Schoffstall.
