DURHAM, N.H. (March 21, 2014) - Rutgers gymnastics third-year head coach Louis Levine has been selected as the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Coach of the Year, as announced at the annual EAGL banquet Friday at the University of New Hampshire. Levine guided the Scarlet Knights to its highest regular season regional qualifying score (RQS) in school history at 195.200.
Levine is the first RU leader to earn conference coach of the year since Chrystal Chollet-Norton accepted the honor in the Atlantic 10 in 1994.
"I am honored to be presented this award," Levine said. "However, this is all about the team, staff and the administration. The hard work and dedication from everyone in the program has led us into this position. It has been a great season so far, but I look forward to more success in the postseason."
Levine, who is in his sixth season overall with the program, helped RU achieve two of its top three scores in school history this season, and five of the top nine. Rutgers set a new team record with a 196.225 mark March 8 in a home quad meet. In addition, Rutgers broke the event records on vault (49.200) and floor exercise (49.325) during the course of the year. In head-to-head competition, the Scarlet Knights are 17-5, including a 4-1 record against teams currently in the top 26 nationally.
Heading into Saturday's EAGL Championships, the Scarlet Knights rank third in the eight-team conference after being picked seventh in the preseason poll. Six different gymnasts picked up 11 All-EAGL accolades and 12 earned All-Scholastic Team recognition. Interest in the program has picked up as well, with the last two home meets at the Livingston Recreation Center being sold out.
The Scarlet Knights will compete in the EAGL Championships Saturday at 2 p.m. on the campus of the University of New Hampshire.
