BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Rutgers women's cross country team braved the rain for the 42nd running of the Paul Short Invitational on Friday morning.
The Scarlet Knights were paced by an eighth place finish by senior Paige Senatore (Delsea, N.J.). The senior Scarlet Knight clocked in at 20:44 and finished only 17 seconds behind first place and also bested last year's mark by 42 seconds.
Rutgers also had four runners with sub-23 minute times. Sophomore Allyson Black (Denville, N.J.) posted a time of 22:06, followed by junior Kaitlyn Bedard (Ringoes, N.J.) finishing in a time of 22:17. Sophomore Alexandra Juzwiak (North Middletown, N.J.) collected a time of 22:44 just ahead of freshman Genevieve Cickavage (Moorestown, N.J.) with her time of 22:47.
Other Scarlet Knights competing on Friday included junior Nisa Cicitta (Glen Gardner, N.J.), recording a time of 23:15, and sophomore Julia DeSpirito (Medford, N.J.) with a time of 23:18.
"Despite the challenging weather conditions, I think the team progressed from a fitness standpoint from our first competition," said head coach James Robinson. "We had some outstanding performances up front and we have to work on running more as a unit from positions 4-6. Hopefully, we'll close the gap next week when attempt to defend our Metropolitan Championship."
Canada's University of Guelph won the team title with 105 points followed by Cornell in second with 155 points and Johns Hopkins in third with 180 points. Rutgers finished in 23rd collecting 587 points.
The Rutgers women's cross country team returns to racing at the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. The Scarlet Knights are set to defend their title on Friday, Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m.
