PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers head football coach Chris Ash named Drew Mehringer Offensive Coordinator, it was announced today. Mehringer will also coach the Rutgers quarterbacks.
"I am excited to welcome Drew to Rutgers football," said Ash. "Drew is a very intelligent person and great football mind. He has been under the tutelage of Tom Herman so he understands how I want the program structured. Drew will take care of the players and be a great recruiter. He's one of the next rising offensive stars in college football."
Mehringer joins the Rutgers staff after spending the 2015 season as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Houston under head coach Tom Herman. The Cougars won the American Athletic Conference with a 12-1 record and will appear in the Peach Bowl. Mehringer has worked for seven seasons with Herman's offense at Houston, Ohio State, Iowa State and Rice. Herman previously served as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2014 while Ash was on staff as co-defensive coordinator.
Prior to arriving in Houston, Mehringer spent the 2014 season at James Madison as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. While at James Madison, the Dukes advanced to the FCS Playoffs for just the second time in the previous six years. JMU's offense ranked 10th nationally and set single-season program records in offensive plays, offensive yards first downs, passing attempts, passing completions, passing touchdowns and passing yards.
Mehringer spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons as a graduate assistant at Ohio State, working with the program's tight ends and wide receivers in his first season before working with the offensive line in his second season in Columbus. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Iowa State, where he worked with the wide receivers.
A native of Mansfield, Texas, Mehringer attended Rice as a quarterback before suffering a career-ending injury. He then served as a student assistant with the quarterbacks with Herman for three seasons, graduating in 2010 with a degree in political science. Mehringer earned a master's degree in sports management at Ohio State in 2013.
