STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Ashleigh Greenham carded a 217 (73-72-72) to place second, one stroke off the pace, in the 61-player Nittany Lion Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday at the Penn State Golf Course. The redshirt sophomore helped the Scarlet Knights tie for third with a 912 (304-311-297) total in the nine-team event.
"The team came out this morning ready to compete and it showed in our scoring," said head coach Kari Williams. "We managed ourselves well on the course and it led to a third place finish. We had two great individual finishes this week in Ashleigh and Emily (Mills), following up her win last week. We will continue building and moving in the right direction."
Greenham was minus four on par fives, with 35 pars and nine birdies, in her second event at RU after transferring from Arizona State.
"I played some solid golf today," said Greenham. "I hung in there towards the end of the round and made some clutch up and downs to save par."
Emily Mills, who placed third in the event last season, turned in another solid performance. The junior captain finished strong and tied for eighth with a 224 (76-76-72). Coming off a victory at last weekend's Rutgers Invitational, Mills was minus one in par five scoring with 38 pars.
The Scarlet Knights were one of two teams, along with host Penn State, to have multiple competitors place among the top 10.
Sophomore Astrid Aneman and freshmen Carrie-Ann Lee and Ana Maria Cortes comprised the remainder of the RU scorecard. Lee carded a very promising 74 on Sunday to finish tied for 31st with a 235 (77-84-74), Aneman tied for 40th at 240 (78-83-79) and Cortes was 46th with a 242 (83-80-79).
Junior Tatum Jackson, competing individually, tied for 23rd with a 232 (77-73-82) on the par 72, 6,306-yard course. She registered 32 pars.
The Nittany Lions had four players place among the top 10 to win the Invitational with an 885 (287-303-295), 22 strokes ahead of second place Columbia. Richmond, which boasted the individual champion in Isabella Rusher, tied for third with RU. The Scarlet Knights out-distanced Delaware, Oklahoma City, Yale, William & Mary and Bucknell.
Rutgers returns to the links at Johnie Imes Invitational, Oct. 3-4, in Columbia, Mo.
