Conor Murphy leads Rutgers at B1G meet for second straight year
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Oct. 29, 2017) – Rutgers men's cross country completed the Big Ten Championships on the 8,000-meter Indiana Championship Cross Country Course on Sunday morning.
The Scarlet Knights placed 12th with a point total of 366. Michigan won the Big Ten team title with 71 points, in front of Michigan State's second place 82. Wisconsin was third with 88 points. All 12 programs competing in the championship race were ranked in their respective regions by the USTFCCCA and included eight teams ranked or receiving votes in the latest Top 30 national poll.
For the second straight year, junior Conor Murphy paced RU in the conference championships. His 73rd place finish in 25:42.0 bettered his time from last season's Big Ten Championships by 13 seconds. Murphy ran the third kilometer of the race in 3:02.1, increasing his standing 10 places to 58th for his high-water mark of the championship.
Sophomore Cole Pschunder and senior Luke Wiley were next for Rutgers in back-to-back finishes in 80th and 81st. The two were separated by eight seconds at the 5K and 6K splits, but Wiley finished strong to finish within two seconds of Pschunder for the second straight week. Both Rutgers runners significantly improved their Big Ten Championship times from one year ago.
Junior Dom Munson (83rd) finished in 25:58.4 to break 26 minutes at a Big Ten Championships for the first time. Freshman Patrick Walsh made his conference championship debut in 89th in 26:11.3, his third fastest 8K of his rookie season.
Senior Trent Brinkofski and freshman Billy Hill rounded out the Scarlet Knights' point scorers, while freshman Tom Holster also picked up his first finish in a Big Ten Championship race.
Rutgers prepares for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Championships on Friday, Nov. 10 at Lehigh's Goodman Campus, which has hosted Rutgers twice already this season.
