Three Scarlet Knights earn IC4A Coaches Association All-East recognition for Top 40 finishes in 200-man race
BRONX, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2017) – Rutgers men's cross country wrapped a successful 2017 season with a standout performance at the IC4A Championships on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park, finishing fourth of 25 teams and placing three on the IC4A Coaches Association All-East honors.
The Scarlet Knights combined for 198 points on a 19-24-37-40-78 finish from their top five on the 8,000-meter championship course. Temple won the title with 43 points and the overall champion, Marc Steinsberger. Columbia and St. Joseph's (Pa.) finished ahead of RU in second and third with 112 and 132 points.
"Our goal was to be in the Top 6 and get a team trophy, so placing fourth was a really good effort," said head coach Mike Mulqueen. "We were not at full strength due to four of our runners affected by illness, so their team placing today shows their determination and team pride to overcome adversity."
Junior Conor Murphy earned a second consecutive nod to the All-East performers list, finishing 20th of the 200 harriers. Sophomore Cole Pschunder (25th) and senior Luke Wiley (38th) each grabbed their first All-East nods. The Top 40 finishers at the championships are named to the All-East Team by the coaches' association, while the Top 6 programs earn team trophies.
Racing on the infamous rolling hills and bends of Van Cortlandt Park, four Scarlet Knights posted their season-best times on the course (Murphy, Pschunder, senior Trent Brinkofski and sophomore Ryan Gross). Brinkofski was fourth for RU in 41st, followed by junior Dom Munson's 82nd place finish to seal in Rutgers' 198 points, which beat fifth place Manhattan's 199 by a single finishing spot.
Freshman Billy Hill became just one of five Scarlet Knights this season to finish all eight races, placing 121st at the IC4A Championships. Freshman Tom Holster and Gross rounded out Rutgers' finishers in 141st and 179th, respectively.
