UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Women's golf placed fifth with a 894 (298-301-295) total at the 14-team Nittany Lion Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday on the Penn State Blue Course. Senior co-captain Emily Mills carded a 71 in the final round to pace three Scarlet Knights in the top 20, placing 14th with a 221 (74-76-71) in the 85-player field.
"We set out to move up the leaderboard in this final round and we were able to make up some ground behind good play from our entire team," said head coach Kari Williams. "Many of our players finished their rounds with pars and birdies which was great to see after we set a goal of competing for all 18 holes."
Mills, who was minus three on par fives with seven birdies, was joined in the top 20 by freshman Lori Char and sophomore Carrie-Ann Lee on the par 72, 6,341-yard course. Char, who improved her score every round, was minus one on par fives with nine birdies to tie for 15th with a 222 (75-74-73). Lee competed individually and was minus three on par fives with seven birdies to finish tied for 20th with a 224 (78-72-74).
"This was Lori's first event in the lineup and we are really happy with her play this weekend," Williams continued. "Coupled with strong play and leadership from our seniors, this is one of the best team 54-hole scores we've had. We'll continue to build off of these experiences as we head into the second half of our fall schedule."
Senior Tatum Jackson (73-77-76) and freshman Harriet Allsebrook (77-74-75) tied for 29th with 226 totals on the Big Ten course. Jackson had a team-best 41 pars, while Allsebrook was minus two on par fives.
Redshirt junior Ashleigh Greenham was even on par threes and rounded-out the RU scorecard with a 230 (76-78-76).
Maryland bested tournament host and Big Ten rival Penn State by three strokes to win the Invitational with an 863 (293-282-288). Laura Van Respaille helped the Terps overcome the Nittany Lions during the final round, winning the event by two strokes with a four-under 212 (74-68-70).
The Scarlet Knights placed ahead of Seton Hall, Harvard, Yale, Ohio, USF, Penn, Columbia, Bucknell and Youngtown State in their third tournament of the fall season.
Rutgers returns to the links at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington, Oct. 10-11 in Seattle.
