Women’s Golf Fifth at Bettie Lou Evans Invite
Sep 27 | Women's Golf
PISCATAWAY - Women's golf is fifth with a 295 total after the opening round of the 13-team Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, played Friday on the University Club of Kentucky Big Blue Course. Senior Carrie-Ann Lee and junior Harriet Allsebrook are both among the top 10, tied for seventh and ninth respectively, entering the second round of the 54-hole event.
"While it was our lowest team score of the season, we had some missed opportunities on a scoreable golf course," said head coach Kari Williams. "We managed ourselves well on the more challenging holes this morning and struggled over our last three holes to finish the round. Carrie-Ann continues to play hard for us and posted another strong round, and it was great to see Harriet play well in her first round back."
Playing in first position and boosted by four birdies, Lee carded a one-under 71 on the par 72, 6,114-yard course.
"Conditions grew more difficult as the day went on," said Lee. "The wind picked up and the course was dry and firm. I struggled with my tee shots but was able to rely on my short game and putting through the round. Tomorrow my focus is to do a better job of managing my missed shots around the course."
Allsebrook returned to action in the Bluegrass State after being sidelined for the initial two tournaments due to an elbow injury. She carded an even par 72 on Friday and was minus one on both par four and five holes with three birdies.
"It was exciting to be back out on the course with my teammates," said Allsebrook. "I scrambled a lot around the course and saved some good pars on tough holes. I'll look to create better scoring chances tomorrow and hopefully will roll in a few more putts."
Sophomore Maeve Rossi, freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs and junior Eun Won Park complete the RU scorecard against a challenging field that includes programs from the SEC, Big Ten, The American and Conference USA.
Diederichs and Rossi are tied for 33rd at 76, while Park registered a 77 on day one. Park was minus two on par five holes, as the Scarlet Knights were one-under on par fives collectively.
Rutgers is three strokes behind fourth place Middle Tennessee and six shots short of third place Western Kentucky with 36 holes remaining. RU is ahead of Eastern Kentucky, Indianapolis, Memphis, Tulane, Marshall, Akron, Murray State and Cincinnati.
Host Kentucky leads the field courtesy of a three-under 285, with second place Penn State two strokes off the pace. PSU's Mathilde Delavallade and Tulane's Carlota Palacios are tied atop the leaderboard with three-under par 69 efforts.
Saturday's second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start slated for Sunday's finale.
Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament via GolfStat.
