WALLACE, N.C. – Junior Maeve Rossi carded the second-lowest 54-hole scorecard in school history en route to a top-10 finish and Rutgers women's golf added the lowest team result in program history as it closed out play on Tuesday at the River Landing Classic in Wallace, North Carolina.
The Scarlet Knights' one-over-par 865 (289-288-288) helped them finish fifth in the 13-player field. East Carolina won the tournament with a 15-under-par 849 (283-282-284), followed by Coastal Carolina and East Tennessee State. High Point University's Sarah Kahn was the tournament's individual winner with her 13-under-par 203 (69-70-64).
RU rolled in 27 birdies during its three rounds, tied for second in the field with East Carolina.
"Maeve put together a great tournament for us and I was proud of how she maintained her focus out on the course today to finish Round two under par and kept it going in Round three," said head coach Kari Williams. "We hit some great shots today, but were not able to get the putts to drop and keep pace with the field. It was a good experience for us to be in a competitive position near the top of the leaderboard and we will continue to work hard on finishing our rounds strong."
Rossi finished tied for sixth in the 72-player field with her four-under-par 212 (73-69-70), as the junior finished the tournament with a team-high 12 birdies through three rounds of play. She capped off her second round with a team-low three-under-par 69, which included six birdies.
"This golf course set up nicely for my game," Rossi said. "I hit a lot of fairways and was able to play aggressively at the pin. I had to be patient with my putting and was able to score out there when I gave myself opportunities."
Sophomores Anna-Maria Diederichs (219: 73-75-71) and Leigha Devine (219: 73-72-74) tied for 21st, as Diederichs closed out play with a one-under-par 71 in the third round. Graduate student Manon Tounalom, who fired off a two-under-par 70 in the first round on Monday, tied for 36th (223: 70-76-77), while rookie Rikke Nordvik rounded out the team scorecard 42nd with a 225 (80-72-73). Sophomore Sun Hwang competed as an individual and tied for 50th with her 231 (79-74-78).
Rutgers next competes at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate from March 14-16 in New Orleans.
