PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse approaches the upcoming 2026 season, set to start with the season opener this year on January 31. Ahead of that campaign, the team announced today that the program will be led by a singular captain this year: Joe Juengerkes.
Juengerkes will serve as a team captain for the second straight year, also being a team captain last season in his first season as a Scarlet Knight. An elite short-stick defensive midfielder, he was named an All-American last year by three separate publications, was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection and was the Rutgers Lacrosse Knight Cup winner.
Juengerkes played in 16 games with seven goals, four assists, 55 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. He was 8th in the Big Ten with 3.44 ground balls per game and 11th in caused turnovers per game
In his career, which includes three seasons at Princeton, Juengerkes has played in 48 collegiate games. He has 69 total ground balls and 27 turnovers in that time. All seven of his career goals and four of his five career assists came last season.
The native of Islip, N.Y., is working on a graduate certificate in Labor Studies and Employment relations. He was also named a Scholar All-American last season by the USILA.
This will be the first time under head coach Brian Brecht that the team has just one captain. Juengerkes is the first solo captain for the Scarlet Knight since Brian Shemesh in 2011.
