Two Diving Podium Finishes Highlight Day Two of Big Ten Championships

Hoffman (7th), Ford (8th) the Top RU Finishers on the Day
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers added two more podium finishes to its Big Ten ledger on Friday, with Katerina Hoffman (seventh) and Sephora Ford (eighth) reaching the finals of the 3 Meter Dive. Five Scarlet Knights overall advanced to the night session, with Bailee Sturgill reaching the consolation finals in diving, with swimmers Anna Vlachou and Emilianna Gonzalez making the C Final in the 50 Free. The Scarlet Knights had two new top-ten list entries on the day, with Vlachou swimming the second fastest 50 Freestyle time in program history and Angelica Bath swimming the ninth fastest 100 Backstroke time.
In the 50 Free, Anna Vlachou followed up her podium and school record performance in the 100 butterfly from Thursday with a strong swim. During prelims, Vlachou touched the wall in 22.37, the second fastest time in school history, to qualify for the C final. Freshman Emilianna Gonzalez swam at 22.42 in the event, just .02 behind her previous personal best, as she now holds the third fastest time in program history in the event. In the C Final, Vlachou swam a 22.45 to finish fourth in that final, while Gonzalez was eighth in the C Final at 22.71.
In the 100 Back, Angelica Bath set a new personal best in prelims with a 54.09. Her time is the ninth fastest in school history. She missed out on a C final appearance by one spot, as the top alternate.
In 3 Meter Diving, Sephora Ford (sixth, 298.95) and Katerina Hoffman (seventh, 298.05) qualified for the finals, while Bailee Sturgill (14th, 272.95) made it to the consolation finals.
In the 3M Finals, two reached the podium. Katerina Hoffman scored a 315.65 for seventh and Sephora Ford scored a 229.25 for eighth. Sturgill scored a 282.10 to finish fourth in the consolation finals and 12th overall.
In the 400 Yard Medley Relay, Rutgers' team of Angelica Bath, Ana Hazlehurst, Anna Vlachou and Emilianna Gonzalez swam a 3:38.94 to place 13th.
Rutgers also swam in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Breaststroke, 500 Freestyle and 50 Freestyle during prelims.
Also on Friday, senior captain Katherine Lang was named the Big Ten Sportsmanship Honorees.
The Scarlet Knights have 265.5 team points through the end of Friday. That places the squad in 11th, ahead of Iowa, Penn State and Illinois. Saturday is the final day of action. It resumes at 11 a.m. Eastern with prelims in the 200 IM, 100 Freestyle, 200 Butterfly and 200 Backstroke, as well as the finals of the 1650 freestyle, the platform diving and the 400 Freestyle Relay.
