COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rutgers men's golf freshman Lucas Politano completed the opening round of the NCAA Columbus Regional on Monday at Ohio State Golf Club's Scarlet Course, carding a 4-over-par 75 through the first 18 holes.
Competing in the NCAA postseason for the first time in his collegiate career, Politano sits tied for 42nd place at +4 heading into Tuesday's second round. Florida's Parker Sands leads the field at 5-under-par, while teammate Jack Turner is the only other golfer under par, sitting alone in second at 2-under-par after 18 holes.
Politano, the first Rutgers freshman to qualify for NCAA Regionals, continues to represent the Scarlet Knights on one of college golf's biggest stages following a standout debut season.
"Lucas Politano is the first Rutgers freshman to go to NCAAs, and to have a freshman hit the ground running is a rarity," head coach Rob Shutte said last week. "He's carried that responsibility and embraced the opportunity. The sky is the limit for him. He's a gamer who loves the bright spotlights, and he's going to get that at NCAAs."
The NCAA Columbus Regional continues Tuesday, with the final round scheduled for Wednesday at the Scarlet Course as Politano looks to climb the leaderboard and contend for a spot in the NCAA Championships.
